The app used to work on your local network and contact the devices directly even if you blocked communication with Kasa’s online services. That is no longer the case, and now the app won’t work at all the devices don’t have cloud access. The devices are very chatty, and very nosy. HomeKit controls the devices just fine with no internet access.

I really wanted to like this app, but the integration with other smart home platforms is a complete disaster. While the app interface itself is okay, the backend stability is nonexistent.
The API breaks almost on a daily basis. I find myself constantly having to open this app and re-authenticate just so my other smart home services can actually "see" my switches. It has reached a point where it’s more work to maintain the connection than it is to just flip a manual wall switch.
If you are looking for a "set it and forget it" experience for your smart home, this isn't it. I’m currently in the process of replacing my Kasa hardware with more reliable brands.
